Frame the question

An assessment should answer a decision question. Define the scope, accessible information and people to consult. The aim is not to analyse everything but to inform a useful business choice.

Combine perspectives

Combine business data, customer feedback and internal operations. A sales issue may stem from the offer, target market or delivery capacity. Avoid accepting the first explanation without comparing it with other evidence.

Separate facts from assumptions

Classify observations by reliability. A widely shared impression remains an assumption until supported. Record missing information and its potential effect on the decision.

Develop options

Present coherent scenarios with advantages, constraints and conditions for success. Conclude with reasoned priorities and an initial action sequence rather than an undifferentiated list of recommendations.
